Your business intelligence tools are useless without team collaboration and integration

I’m going to start this by making a bold statement: Business intelligence tools within the workplace are next to useless if your corporate culture and team integration is lacking.

The greatest and most successful businesses are not, despite what you might think, where they are simply through the sheer will and “genius” of their founder or CEO, but because they have created an open, collaborative environment where ideas are welcomed from all parts of the organisation.
In short, the key principle here is that the quality of the innovation within your organisation depends completely on unleashing the potential of your people.

22. At the heart of this innovation, is the powerful component that can shape the way you operate, creating efficiencies and allowing you to spot trends and patterns that will have a profound effect on the bottom line: your data.

Thanks to advanced analytics, data discovery is now something every organisation can utilise, making use of the crucial insights you need to achieve things like growth, resolve urgent issues, create forecasts and many more things besides.

And if you are considering using a business intelligence tool within your operations be assured there are many to choose from, a quick Google search will reveal a myriad of options. They exist to help you understand trends and deriving insights from your data so that you can make tactical and strategic business decisions.

But here’s the thing: during the last 15 years I’ve spent working with many organisations helping them to really get the most from their data operations I’ve seen time and time again how they have wasted those opportunities by effectively siloing their data teams from the wider organisation.

I’ve witnessed first-hand how, when integration and collaboration is lacking in a workplace, you can have all the business intelligence tools in the world at your disposal but delivery of data still falls short.

Here’s a statistic to ponder: around 80 per cent of all data and analytics projects fail completely, I think it’s mainly due to the disconnect between data teams and the wider business.

However, the good news is it shouldn’t be too difficult to turn things around so that you do get the most benefit from your business intelligence and data gathering investment.

With that in mind, here are three tips for promoting an integrated, collaborative data culture in order to derive the most from your data, analytics and business intelligence tools and ultimately fuel company innovation:

1. Make sure the entire team understands or has access to all resources so they are, as much as possible, data-literate.

2. Integrate your workplace so that data teams understand fully the projects being worked on, not just the information requests. This allows work to flow more collaboratively and promotes innovation. You can do this by simply asking each department to set the data team a business challenge and work with them to solve it. This way, key decision makers in the business can have a clear understanding of how data teams operate and processes used to deliver data requests.

3. Once a project or campaign is finished, it should be shared with the whole team to show how data has helped to deliver results. This will encourage teams to think about how data can help their day-to-day roles and promote conversations between departments.

From human resources to marketing, data is now at the heart of every business function whether it’s within a start up, SME or PLC.

The effective harnessing of data allows us to streamline all operations, whether that’s getting a product made in the first place through to the logistics of getting it to our customers. Crucially, it allows us to spot where things are not working as they should, so that we can fix that problem and boost overall efficiency, productivity and, ultimately, the bottom line.

During the last 15 years, every time I moved to a new organisation I would see these issues repeating, forcing me to effectively start from scratch building the processes I needed to create a system that catered to analytics teams and was easy to use for business decision-makers.

There was a clear and obvious requirement for a tool to address these problems which is why I’ve made the decision to enter the world of entrepreneurship to provide the very tools businesses need to tackle these challenges. I aim to unlock the potential companies miss through lack of analytics integration, workflow transparency and ROI assessment.
